How to get ChatGPT API Key?

The initial step to leverage the robust language processing features of ChatGPT is to acquire an API key. This key allows you to seamlessly incorporate ChatGPT into various applications, such as websites or mobile apps, which require natural language processing. In this article we’re going to walk you through a detailed procedure on how to secure your unique ChatGPT API key.

Step 1 – Create an account on the OpenAI website

First you need to create an account on the OpenAI website. Go to https://chat.openai.com/auth/login.

Then, click “SignUp” button and enter your email address and password to create a new account.

You can also use your Google or Microsoft account to SignUp with.

Step 2 – Apply for API access

Upon account creation, your next move is to request access to the API. Navigate to the API keys page and click on the “Create new secret key” button, which prompts a pop-up window. Store this secret key in a secure and reachable place because, for security purposes, it won’t be retrievable via your OpenAI account. Should you misplace this secret key, a new one will need to be generated.

Step 3 – Copy your ChatGPT API key

To initiate the utilization of ChatGPT’s potent language processing abilities, you simply need to copy and paste this key into your application. It’s crucial not to disclose your API key to others, or reveal it in the browser or other client-side scripts.

To safeguard your account’s security, OpenAI might also autonomously rotate any API key identified as having been publicly leaked.

Step 4 – Revoke API key if needed

Press the “Revoke key” button to disable the newly created key instantly. Any API requests submitted using this key will be refused, potentially causing disruptions to any systems still relying on it. After revocation, this API key will no longer be visible or modifiable.

Moreover, if your affiliations include multiple organizations, this setting determines the default organization for API key requests.
