Opinion gathers the columns, essays, and reader-submitted arguments that we feel are worth publishing even when they disagree with our newsroom consensus. We hold opinion writing to a higher standard than news writing, not a lower one. Every piece must surface its underlying evidence, take its strongest counterargument seriously, and propose something more useful than another round of doom or hype. Our rotating roster of contributors includes practitioners, academics, founders, and policy specialists, and we are committed to publishing voices from outside the usual San Francisco bubble. The bar for publication is high: we reject roughly two thirds of unsolicited submissions and ask another quarter for substantial revisions. What survives is what you read here, and we stand behind it even when it makes our advertisers uncomfortable, which is one reason we do not accept advertising.
