Initial projections based on GPT-4’s development suggested a 2025 release for GPT-5. However, a report from Business Insider indicates a potential announcement as early as the summer of 2024. There was heightened anticipation for an April 22 release, coinciding with Sam Altman’s birthday, but no announcement occurred. Recent reports now hint at a possible launch on April 23.
There is also speculation that OpenAI might introduce an intermediary version, GPT-4.5, which would feature enhanced performance and a larger context window, prior to the full GPT-5 release. Currently, the free version of ChatGPT runs on the older GPT-3.5 model. To access the latest model, users must subscribe to a $20 per month plan. It is likely that GPT-5 will also adopt a similar subscription model.
